I personally enjoyed the first half of this free book, which is all about how GSM works. The author starts from the very beginning, explaining what a phone call is and how it's different from a chat, as well as some topologies that you might have learned about in your networking courses. In contrast to other introductory texts that gloss over these basics, the author makes it abundantly clear what's going on throughout the entire process of an actual phone call going from one client to another client. The second half of the book focuses on a more hands-on approach with using a physical GSM switch and Wireshark software to "intercept" calls by listening into them without permission. The chapters are short, which makes it easy to pick up the text and put it down again. The language is clear and easy to read, although there are occasional sentences that could use some reworking.
