Due, in part, to off-duty research conducted by IRS criminal investigator Gary Alford,[27] Ross Ulbricht was alleged by the FBI to be the founder and owner of Silk Road and the person behind the pseudonym "Dread Pirate Roberts" (DPR). He was arrested on 2 October 2013 in San Francisco[9][28][29][30][31] in Glen Park Library, a branch of the San Francisco Public Library.[31] Ulbricht was indicted on charges of money laundering, computer hacking, conspiracy to traffic narcotics,[31][32] and attempting to have six people killed.[33] Prosecutors alleged that Ulbricht paid $730,000 to others to commit the murders, although none of the murders actually occurred.[33][34] Ulbricht ultimately was not prosecuted for any of the alleged murder attempts.[35]

On 4 February 2015, the jury convicted Ulbricht of seven charges,[12] including charges of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, narcotics trafficking, money laundering, and computer hacking. Silk Road had a Tor-based book club that continued to operate following the initial site's closure and even following the arrest of one of its members. Reading material included conspiracy theories and computer hacking. Some of the titles included mainstream books as well as books such as The Anarchist Cookbook and Defeating Electromagnetic Door Locks. Most of the titles on this book club were pirated. This book club still exists as a private Tor-based chatroom.[97][98]
On 13 February 2014, Defcon announced that Silk Road 2.0's escrow accounts had been compromised through a vulnerability in Bitcoin protocol called "transaction malleability".[103] While the site remained online, all the bitcoins in its escrow accounts, valued at $2.7 million, were reported stolen.[103] It was later reported that the vulnerability was in the site's "Refresh Deposits" function, and that the Silk Road administrators had used their commissions on sales since 15 February to refund users who lost money, with 50 percent of the hack victims being completely repaid as of 8 April.[104]
Last week, Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger reportedly informed employees that hackers had infiltrated the company and stole a copy of the latest installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, due out on May 26. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the suspected perpetrators demanded a ransom, or they would release the movie in 20-minute increments if Disney failed to pay up.
"More and more frequently, hackers responsible for ransomware attacks take the money and provide no (or inadequate) means to decrypt the files after payment. Sometimes, they even attempt to extort more," Kulik explained.
By not paying a ransom immediately, "Disney is taking the right approach because there is nothing they can do to prevent the hackers from leaking the movie right now, so paying any ransom solves nothing," he added.
Rick Holland, vice president at the digital risk management firm Digital Shadows, likened paying hackers to mafia extortion tactics. "Just like in 'The Sopranos,' once you pay them out, they will continue to stop by to collect their funds," he said, invoking the hit HBO television show.
If studios aren't willing to put their efforts into prevention, there are other ways they can deal with their losses. Goggin said that hacked companies could turn their misfortunes into opportunities.

Heyo, it seems like the download pages still point to the hacked ISOs.Honestly, the only reason why I noticed is because I was downloading the ISOs in bulk using wget, I saw a strange IP address and the fact that it was a PHP file.
Considering that this might happen again, have you guys considered some sort of way (besides md5sums) that we can verify the ISOs come from you? Maybe something like GPG?That way if the server was hacked, the isos were replaced, and the publicly listed .iso md5sums were changed, the isos would still have incorrect gpg signatures.
Edit by Clem: No. We need HTTPs to protect communication (mostly on your side, and against local or middle attacks). Here we have an intrusion, so it has nothing to do with the protocol. The hackers used wordpress to get in.

Ok I started downloading it via torrent, but now stopped it until things are correct.I am concerned about sites I maintain via wordpress hosting, however my servers are on 1and1 so I think 1and1 keeps them pretty safe and I have security plugins, but my wordpress have been hacked before also, but not since beefing up wordpress security, 1and1 is good in shutting down the site if it is under attack and alerting me.Do you have your own server or is it hosted, maybe you should go to hosting that has more security ? Idk, now I must check my wordpress sites.
by the way i notied when submitting my comment, you have wordpress on this blog below, not good for hackers.. also different table names instead of the default wp_ and not using admin as a username, and also once hacked recommend malware and virus scanning all files on the server, and if you are not sure, go way back until you know a file on the server was not compromised.I have over 100 sites I manage, this happened to several of them 2 times, until I had more beefed up security.do you use bulletproof security, ithemes security, wordfence and other plugins to protect ?
